What's involved
How a electrical & panel upgrades job goes
Assessment
The electrician checks the panel brand, capacity, wiring type and grounding, and what you plan to add.
Panel upgrade
Replacing a problem or undersized panel, often coordinated with the power company to disconnect and reconnect service.
Circuits and chargers
Dedicated circuits for kitchens, AC, EV chargers and pool equipment, installed and inspected.
Generators and surge protection
Transfer switches or interlocks for portable or standby generators, plus whole-home surge protection.
South Florida specifics
What's different here
The things a contractor from out of the area can miss.
- Insurers commonly flag certain panel brands, fuse boxes, and cloth or aluminum branch wiring on 4-point inspections.
- Hurricane season makes generator hookups popular. Back-feeding a generator without a transfer switch or interlock is dangerous and illegal.
- Kitchen remodels, EV chargers and new AC systems may need more capacity than an older 100-amp panel can provide.
Before you hire
What I make sure is in your estimate
When I connect you with a contractor, these are the items I check so nothing gets added halfway through the job.
- Panel brand, amperage and what's being replaced
- Permit and power company coordination
- Surge protection included or optional
- Transfer switch or interlock for generators
- Patch and paint after any wall work
- Licensed electrician, with license number on the bid
Questions
Electrical & Panel Upgrades: common questions
My insurer flagged my electrical panel. What should I do?
Send me the report. Certain panels and fuse boxes are common flags, and a licensed electrician can quote the replacement your insurer is asking for.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. A load calculation shows whether your panel has room. Older or smaller panels often need an upgrade first.
Can I plug my generator into a dryer outlet?
No. That's back-feeding, and it can kill a utility worker or start a fire. A licensed electrician should install a transfer switch or interlock.
